My sister in law was about 12 weeks pregnant. She lost the baby on Friday (or before Friday). At her Friday appt. (11/2) they could not find the heartbeat. She saw it at her prior appt. so sometime after that appt. and between Friday's appt., the baby passed away. She was scheduled to have surgery on Tues. (11/6) to have baby removed.
I received a phone call at 5:45 a.m. Sunday morning telling me that she had rushed to the hospital. She had been bleeding on and off all weekend (thought she was naturally miscarrying), but things got out of control and she thought she needed to go to the hospital.
Her husband drove over 100 miles an hour- ran every red light and they made it in record time. He demanded she be taken immediately to see the Dr. at the ER and they did not question him (thank goodness). She joked that she thinks he would have been arrested if they said to wait in the lobby!
Upon arriving there a mulittude of bad things happened- she was bleeding heavily and the ER was hoping for her body to naturally miscarry the baby. They tried the ER's way until she progressively got worse- her blood pressure dropped (down to 60/30 at one point), she passed out, cried and screamed in pain and contiued to lose alot of blood. Around 10 or 11, they paged her Dr. for surgery and she had the DNC Sunday- she said the surgery was wonderful compared to the prior events.
Her Dr. said she lost 1/2 her blood supply (normal people have like 13, she has 6 something right now) and they began talking about giving her a blood transfusion... She told him she preferred not to, but would do whatever needed to stay alive. My mother-in-law offered her blood- my sister-in-law laughed in the middle of this crisis and ask the Dr. if she got mil's blood would she turn into her? MIL did not think it was as funny as she did.... According to SIL, MIL is still trying to give her her "damn blood" too.
She truly thought she was dying this past weekend- She even told her husband several times "i am dying"! She is out of the hospital (released late Monday). She is very weak and on bed rest for several weeks. She is not expected to fully recover for 4-6 weeks when her blood rebuilds to full pool. She has to keep getting her blood checked and hopefully will not need anybody else's blood.
She did specifically mention one thing though - her nurse in the ER was a pregnant lady- She said she was like "COME ON PEOPLE give me a break, can't i get an old infertile nurse. " She has a great sense of humor and it is definitely still in tact.
Right now, she is unsure if she wants to risk going through something like this again and is saying she doesn't want to try for another baby. She is cherishing her little "wild man" (he's two), probably more than ever. She says he is the only thing that cheers her up right now.
